The Environmental (positive) Impact of Urban Green Roofs
טקסט בעברית בהמשך The technology of green roofs makes it possible to grow vegetation on the roof, vegetation that is an effective substitute for the green areas lost in the urban space as a result of the development. Green roofs are not a new phenomenon - The Hanging Gardens of Babylon are probably the first documented green roofs, and in later periods they appeared in traditional construction in northern Europe. The modern use began in the early twentieth century in Germany and was designed to curb the influence of runoff water - rainwater that does not seep into the ground and which the municipal drainage systems fail to absorb, a phenomenon that creates flooding and causes damage in the city. The green roofs produce a kind of "sponge" on the city roofs, moderate the flow and even absorb some of the rainwater, thus achieving an effective and somewhat inexpensive solution to the excess water.
